What’s Fresh: Best picks at the farmers market in September

As summer turns into fall, the Red Stick Farmers Market will unveil a new array of crops and local goodies.

Darlene Rowland of the farmers market says September will bring the best of squash-type vegetables, roots and leafy greens.

Customers at the markets can expect to see top-of-the-line radishes, sweet onions and shallots, pumpkins, turnips, winter squash and tomatoes. For fruit, the beginning of fall means crisp Gala and Jazz apples, plums, blackberries and raspberries. Salad greens, spinach and kale are also in the prime of their season in early September.

Other veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage will stay fresh the whole month.

Louisiana favorites like strawberries and melons are nearing the end of their season this month, so make sure to stop by and grab some while they’re still fresh.

The Red Stick Farmers Market also offers locally made artisan breads, jams, wines, salad dressings and more.

When and where to find the Red Stick Farmers Market:

Thursdays, weather permitting, from 8 a.m.-noon at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center
