Chris Rock ups his filmmaking game with the new comedy Top Five
It didn’t take long for one of America’s best comics to get back in audiences’ good graces. After claiming the throne of comedy in the late ’90s, Chris Rock faded from popularity after a string of silver screen debacles. While Pootie Tang might be his most underrated film, who honestly remembers I Think I Love My Wife? Sure, you’ve seen Rock here and there, and even in the god-awful Grown-Ups movies, but the comedian hasn’t truly shined in the cinemas. Until now. This weekend’s major release is Top Five, a movie Rock stars in, wrote and directed about a former star trying to get his career back on track. After an impressive debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, the major studios got into a bidding war, and Rock eventually sold the film’s rights to Paramount for $12.5 million. The studio heads aren’t the only ones who think Top Five is one of the best movies of the year. Critics think so, too. Rosario Dawson, Tracy Morgan, J.B. Smoove and Cedric the Entertainer co-star. Rated R.
