Summer Insider’s Guide: Houmas House

Why We Love It

The gardens are an expansive 38 acres and considered the most beautiful in Plantation Country, showcasing a panorama of indigenous Louisiana plant life and stunning exotics. Located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Houmas House Estate and Gardens allows visitors to experience life on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800s.

A Must Do

Try the restaurants on the property: Latil’s Landing and The Carriage House. These capture the attention of food critics across the country. Stop at the quaint Turtle Bar. It’s discreet, full of history and known for its craft cocktails. Stay the night or weekend in a luxurious cottage to allow plenty of time for exploring and relaxing at the estate. Guided mansion tours are offered daily from 9 a.m. through 7 p.m., and offer a glimpse into plantation life. Walk through the property’s 250-year history.
