Before she ever took up golf, Sophia Macias was a dancer. She only got into the sport because her brother played, and the competitor inside of her wanted to win that sibling rivalry.
Whatever the reason, it seems to be working out well for Macias, who now finds herself dancing up the leaderboard at just about every tournament she enters. The Episcopal High freshman has already racked up back-to-back Metro titles as well as two top-five finishes at the LHSAA State Golf Championships.
It’s a remarkable rise for such a young talent, who had her first competitive year of golf interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. But she didn’t let that stop her progress.
“COVID kind of shut everything down, and I was bummed out about that,” she says. “But I think it gave me some time to work on my game and focus on getting better and mentally being prepared to go out on the course. I think it was a learning experience, and I’m only going to get better.”
Macias was the only golfer at this year’s Girls Metro Tournament to shoot below par, finishing with a 3-under-par 69. She hasn’t let any of that success go to her head though. She may not be old enough for a driver’s license yet, but she already possesses maturity and humility well beyond her years.
“You have to try to be humble about it,” Macias says. “I think that’s really important. You have to take it one shot at a time, and I think you can sort of transfer that (mindset) over into your own life. You can’t rush things, and you have to stay in the moment. You can’t be worried about anything else.”
