It doesn’t seem to matter where you put Caroline Johnson on the field. She’s going to hold her own.

Last season as a freshman, Johnson started out playing outfield for Dutchtown before being moved over to second base despite her most natural position at shortstop, where she’ll mostly play this year.

“I’ve always been pretty versatile, but my main position has always been shortstop,” Johnson tells 225. “I think it’s a lot more mental because you have to have better communication on the field. I had to learn how to talk more and how to lead more stepping into that role.”

Johnson’s efforts helped the Griffins put together a 21-6 record—including an undefeated mark in district 5-5A play—to earn the No. 1 seed in the Division I playoffs.

The team fell shy of its expectations a year ago, but that’s only fueled the fire inside Johnson heading into her junior and senior seasons.

“Last year I was a freshman so I didn’t really know what to expect but it was really exciting going undefeated (in district),” she says. “This year I’ve tried to bring that same mindset. It’s a new team with different players, but we have multiple players who can step up into those roles.”
