Summer Insider’s Guide: Louisiana Old State Capitol

Why We Love It

Prominently located in downtown Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Old State Capitol is best known for its stained glass dome and cast iron staircase. The 65-year-old National Historic Landmark has withstood war, fire and abandonment, and it’s a standing testament to the resiliency of Louisiana and its people.

A Must Do

After you walk the cast iron stairs and take in the beauty of the rotunda, you should watch the 12-minute, 4D immersive theatrical film “Ghost of the Castle.” It depicts the life of the titular ghost, Sarah Morgan, in an authentic Civil War-era setting. Exit by rolling down the hill and visiting the Old Governor’s Mansion, the Old State Capitol’s sister museum just down the street.

What’s New This Summer

On January 29, 1919, Congress ratified the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages within the United States. Learn the ins and outs of prohibition in Louisiana at a new exhibit coming this Summer.

Insider’s Secret

Louisiana’s Old State Capitol offers free admission! Also, if you’re looking for a great photo op, around 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day, the sun hitting the stained glass makes for a stunning picture.
