Dressing for Sport: What to Wear on Game Day

We know your love for LSU sports never dies. You tailgate at Tiger Stadium, chant with the Tiger Band and are ecstatic when our Tigers win championships. You’ve got the basic gear to show off your dedication to your team, but what about when you’re ready to up your style or refresh your wardrobe? Lindsey Rohling of Alumni Hall Stores and Caitlin Saucier of Sauci Style offered some advice on gear and trends to help you look great while showing your school spirit.

Football

In the South, tailgating is a sport in itself — especially in Baton Rouge.

Ladies have many options beyond a simple team T-shirt. Look for cotton dresses, rompers, maxi skirts, purple-and-gold prints and accessories.

LSU is infamous for night games in Death Valley, and that means tailgating all day. Start with cute and comfortable footwear. Cowboy boots worn with dresses or cutoff jeans look great, but those boots will be HOT — literally and figuratively. Sandals, flats, and sneakers in the right hues of purple and gold can make an outfit on game day. When the weather starts to cool down, move toward leggings and denim paired with scarves, boots and booties.

Alumni Hall offers a huge selection of Columbia shirts, polos, and dress shirts for men at their store in Perkins Rowe and online. For night games, the guys tend to dress up a little more, so Rohling suggests Cutter & Buck button-downs with jeans or khakis. A nice leather belt and boots are great investments for male football fans. You can pair the LSU leather belt with a Nike Dri-Fit polo and shorts, or a button-down and jeans when the heat slacks off. For guys looking to take their fandom up a notch, Rohling suggests an all-over logo pant paired with purple or gold shoes.

Saucier notes that the perfect pair of sunglasses can complete your game day look. “With colored lenses being a huge trend, rock a pair of colored aviators in purple or gold,” she says.

Basketball

Basketball games are climate controlled so you don’t have to worry as much about dressing for the weather. You can really go casual, dressy or somewhere in between to the PMAC, as long as you show your pride and wear your school colors. “Don’t think about sitting courtside without a pair of killer sneakers.” Saucier says.  Basketball season also means a fair number of weekday games, so it’s good to have outfits and gear that can transition easily from work to play. Rohling says that “men can quickly transition from office to PMAC with Tiger gear such as quarter-zip pullovers or jackets worn over a button-down work shirt”.

Ladies, scarves are the perfect accessory to add to your ever-growing purple-and-gold stockpile. Look for prints in team colors that will tie your outfit together. For those with children, weekday games during basketball season usually mean school nights, so keep things simple and fast. “A sweatshirt will keep kids warm and a pompom or popcorn will keep them happy,” Rohling says.

Baseball

Baseball season is the perfect time to wear a raglan tee with the national pastime staple, the baseball cap. Raglans are traditionally 3/4 sleeve, which is perfect for beginning to midseason. Even though baseball has a more laid-back vibe, don’t skip the accessories. Earrings make your cap look feminine, and you can’t go wrong with a Louisiana necklace. Guys can wear accessories too. Alumni Hall offers a great selection of LSU watches and belts. Tanks and fitted tees paired with shorts are perfect in warm weather, which is most of the season in Baton Rouge.

Saucier notes that baseball season offers an opportunity for the ladies to upgrade their footwear. “Set up your summer style by swapping your flip flops for a pair of gladiators. Wear them with denim shorts or a dress,” she says.

Bonus: Staple Pieces That Cross Seasons

Guys, a good vintage-inspired tee, moisture-wicking polo and a mesh-lined sportsman shirt with your team logo can be worn through just about any season.

Ladies, invest in purple-and-gold sneakers like Converse or Skicks, an LSU cross-body bag, a printed scarf, and Louisiana jewelry.

When planning your wardrobe, don’t forget the kids. Girls will get plenty of use out of an LSU hair bow and a cheerleader uniform or pretty dress. Get your little guys a ballcap and tee to coordinate with daddy.

The team at Alumni Hall in Perkins Rowe can help you with all of your game-day gear, from the freshest looks to the coolest tailgate.
