Men’s patterned button-downs for warmer months

As the weather warms up and outdoor festivals continue to be a part of your weekend schedule, you’re likely to feel the pull to break out your T-shirts and shorts. But there’s something about a crisp button-down shirt that still looks put-together, even with a more casual vibe.

Sure, you can roll up the sleeves on a long-sleeved button-down and call it a day, but the short-sleeved variety is making a comeback. Gone are the days when that thin, starched white short-sleeved shirt (complete with pocket protector) was the awkward office uniform.

Labels such as Ben Sherman, Penguin and Scotch & Soda are ditching these stale corporate versions and producing, instead, hip, retro designs that are perfect for spring days spent outside. Two local outfitters and one of our favorite vintage boutiques are already well ahead of the curve in bringing the trend to Baton Rouge.

Don’t be afraid of funky patterns—just make sure the colors are muted (like the ones we found in shades of blue, gray and white), and you can’t go wrong.

Wear them with slim dark jeans or chinos for a nighttime outdoor concert, or slim-cut shorts for a daytime affair. Never ever tuck them in, but do cuff up the sleeves if you want a little more sun on your arms.
