Draw insects, stargaze or check out canned-food structures at LASM this weekend

This Labor Day weekend, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum is offering loads of special programming for all ages to enjoy.

Thursday, Aug. 31: CANstruction 2017

American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge teams up with LASM, Shaw Center for the Arts and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank tonight at CANstruction 2017. With the aim of raising hunger awareness, architects and AIA members create structures out of canned food with the theme “Rock CAN Roll.” Open to the public, the event invites attendees to view all of the structures and cast a vote for a creation to win a Peoples’ Choice award. The event also includes food, drinks and live music by Jake Gunter. The CANtina Walk starts at 6 p.m. at LASM and is $20 per person. The celebration continues afterward from 7-8 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 2: Hands-On Happenings

On the first Saturday of each month, the museum presents Hands-On Happenings. At this month’s workshop, attendees create their own insect illustrations. The free program begins at 10 a.m.

Then at 11 a.m., Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show explores the art and science of the seasons in the Adalié Brent Auditorium. In this kid-friendly show, the audience enjoys stories, songs and games with Miss Trudy and her puppet friends Sheldon the Sheepdog and Frederick the Mouse.

Saturday, Sept. 2 to Sunday, Sept. 3: Planetarium Grand Reopening Film Festival

With the arrival of LASM’s brand new, state-of-the-art 4K projection system, the museum is hosting a Planetarium Grand Reopening Film Festival. Visit lasm.org for the full lineup. On Saturday at 10 a.m., the festival kicks off with Planetarium Family Hour & Stargazing, where guests can sit around the “camp fire” and enjoy an interactive presentation about stars in constellations before enjoying a planetarium show.

Sunday, Sept. 3: Free First Sunday

Every first Sunday of the month, LASM and other area museums offers free admission to the galleries, as well as $6 reduced admission to the planetarium shows. Free First Sundays are one of the best ways to enjoy the art and science exhibitions and activities available at LASM.

LASM is at 100 River Road South. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit lasm.org.
