Learn about WWI history at three downtown museums tonight, Sept. 28

One night, three museums. Join the Capitol Park Museum, the USS Kidd Veterans Memorial & Museum and Louisiana’s Old State Capitol tonight, Sept. 28, as they commemorate the centennial of the year the United States entered World War I.

Each museum will be showing a special exhibit and hosting an opening night reception.

“For Home and Country: Louisiana in the Great War” will be on view at Capitol Park. This exhibit is organized into four sections: homefront, mobilization, warfront and memorialization. Museum-goers can examine a variety of artifacts including a souvenir pillow from Camp Beauregard, a Hotchkiss M1914 machine gun and American and German helmets.

The USS Kidd will be showing “Voices from the Lost Generation: Louisianians in World War I 1917-1918.” This exhibit will display military uniforms and showcase stories from the homefront. On the second floor, museum-goers will have the opportunity to walk through a trench, getting a sense of the terror of war for themselves.

The Old State Capitol will be showing “Campaigning for Victory: Poster Art of the Great War.” More than 50 propaganda posters will be on display, along with some of the troops’ personal photos and mementos.

Don’t worry about museum hopping. Admission is free and there will be trolley transportation from museum to museum, each of which will be serving refreshments.

All three museums will be open 5-8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 28.
