Unleashed: Cat Tails & Cocktails gala returns to Baton Rouge Oct. 30

The Cat Haven gala was the cat’s meow from 2000 to 2012. In 2013 and 2014, the non-profit switched from a formal format to a more casual “pawty.”

This year, the 14th annual gala returns as “The Cat-illion” at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Designed to appeal to city sophisti-cats (sorry, couldn’t help it), the evening includes refreshments, live music by The Eddie Smith Band and dancers from Ric Seeling Dance Studio.

Feline-friendly individuals who cannot attend the event can still help the kitty cause by participating in the silent auction. Online bidding ends at noon on Oct. 30th and continues at the gala.

“We hope to raise $25,000 to support the Cat Haven Adoption Center,” says Cat Haven Executive Director Wendy Decker. “The proceeds are dedicated to the medical expenses—routine testing, vaccinating, microchipping and spaying/neutering—of the cats and kittens who are rescued and [available for] adoption. They also pay for flea treatment, litter, other necessary supplies to keep kitties healthy and happy [while they are in our care].”

Since its merger with Project Purr Baton Rouge, Cat Haven has become the city’s largest and only exclusively feline rescue. This year, the Cat Haven Adoption Center expects to temporarily house more than 1,000 cats and kittens as they await placement in new homes.

Creature feature

Among the fabulous felines available from Cat Haven are:

SqueakersSqueakers is a 2-year-old female brown-and-white tabby. She came to Cat Haven after her owner passed away. She is a sweet girl who gets along well with other kitties and people of all ages.

Kovu

Kovu is 7-month-old male orange-and-white kitten. He was born to a pregnant stray, who had her kittens in a box of clothes left for donation on a back porch. When the surprised homeowners found them, the kitty family was brought to Cat Haven. Kovu is a very friendly guy, who gets along with children and other cats.

Calypso

Calypso is a 1-year-old calico. This friendly girl loves everyone. Her previous owners didn’t spay her. When she had kittens, the owners took the whole family to Animal Control. Transferred to Cat Haven and placed in a foster home, Calypso’s kittens are grown and gone. Now she’s ready to leave that foster for a new home. She gets along well with other cats.

These pets have all been vaccinated, spayed/neutered and FeLeuk/FIV tested. Many other adoptable cats and kittens are available at Cat Haven. Call the shelter at 636-2680 to make an appointment.
