Celebrate a Louisiana sculpture artist this week
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge will unveil “Honoring Our Own: Dr. Charles Smith” on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Shell Gallery at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center. The exhibit features the works of Charles Smith, a Hammond-based figural sculpture artist whose work reflects the African American experience.
This thought-provoking exhibit, which runs through Dec. 31, is a tribute to African Americans who have made significant cultural contributions to the nation. Smith’s art, created from castoff objects of everyday life, conveys poignant expressions, from rage to joy, with a mission to address historical injustices, promote social justice and denounce racism. The Arts Council will also honor Smith with an opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., where attendees can meet the artist behind the evocative works.
The Shell Gallery at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center is located at 233 Saint Ferdinand St. Find more information here.
